An 8-year-old transgender boy was recently kicked out of a New Jersey Cub Scout troop after the parents of other scouts complained about the boy being transgender.
Joe Maldonado’s mother, Kristie Maldonado, was shocked when scout officials in Secaucus told her that her son couldn’t be a part of the pack anymore because he was born as a girl. Her son had been living as a boy for more than a year and had told them before joining.
“Not one of the kids said, ‘You don’t belong here,’” Maldonado said of the other scouts in her son’s pack.
As it turns out, it was the kid’s parents who complained.
Members of the LGBT community are calling it the first case of a transgender person being kicked out of scouts. This isn’t the first time the Boy Scouts of America have been involved in controversy. Previously, they were forced to amend their rules to allow gay scout leaders to lead.
A statement issued by Boy Scouts didn’t implicitly comment on their transgender policy, but they did suggest that their program was designed for boys ages 7 to 10 whose birth certificates indicate that they are male.
The move was condemned by civil right’s like the American Civil Liberties Union.
