There’s nothing like coming home for the holidays to see family you haven’t seen in ages.
That’s what this time of the year is for, after all, from pigging out on Thanksgiving together to ringing in the new year surrounded by loved ones.
But due to overseas conflicts, not everyone can take part in these celebratory occasions. Those who have been sworn into service don’t usually get to decide whether or not they come home for the holidays.
When it does happen, though, it can be absolutely magical for all loved ones involved — just like we see when this soldier surprises his mom at work.
Patrick Conwell came home for Christmas in December 2014 after being in Afghanistan for nine months, and he wanted to make it an extra special surprise for his family.
With the help of his brother and sister-in-law, Patrick planned on crashing a party that had been set up to reveal the sex of the couple’s second child. Little did his parents know that what was waiting inside the box wasn’t blue or pink.
As Patrick’s mom, dad, and sister sat on the couch in astonishment, a green balloon floated up in front of them. Then, the next green thing that popped out made them jump for joy.
