The DC Cannabis Coalition will hand out free joints to attendees at Donald Trump’s inauguration, WUSA reports.
The pro-marijuana group told the station they will march from Dupont Circle to the National Mall – where Trump will be sworn in on January 20.
“The main message is it’s time to legalize cannabis at the federal level,” the group’s founder, Adam Eidinger, told WUSA.
“We are looking at a guy who as recently as April said that they are going to enforce federal law on marijuana all over the country. He said marijuana is dangerous,” he added, referring to Trump’s Attorney General pick Jeff Sessions.
Eldiger’s group helped push through a ballot initiative making it legal to possess up to two ounces of marijuana in Washington DC, though selling it remains illegal.
“We don’t want any money exchanged, whatsoever. This is really a gift for people who come to Washington, D.C.,” he said.
The group plans to hand out 4,200 joints and have everyone light up 4 minutes and 20 seconds into Trump’s inaugural address.
Though possession is legal, using it in public is illegal.
“We are going to tell them that if they smoke on federal property, they are risking arrest. But, that’s a form of civil disobedience,” said Eidinger. “I think it’s a good protest. If someone wants to do it, they are risking arrest, but it’s a protest and you know what, the National Mall is a place for protest.”
