The Muslim student who filed a police report alleging that she was harassed on the subway on Dec. 1 by drunken, hateful white men shouting “Donald Trump!” lied to police in the report in order to avoid getting in trouble for violating her curfew.
Yasmin Seweid, 18, of Long Island, New York, decided to file a false police report. She accused the fictional men of calling her a terrorist and trying to snatch her hijab.
On Wednesday, Seweid caved in and told officers that it was a lie.
“Nothing happened, and there was no victim,” a police source said.
In response to the incident, Seweid’s parents forced her to shave her head. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail for each charge.
Police nearly arrested a man that happened to match one of her fake descriptions.
“She had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story,” a police source said.
Seweid even took to Facebook to post about the emotional attack.
“I was harassed on the subway last night,” she wrote. “And it was just so dehumanizing I can’t speak about it without getting emotional.”
Police gave her the benefit of the doubt and wrote the inconsistencies in her story off as nothing more than typical lapses by someone who was traumatized.
As officers investigated her claims, they failed to find any witnesses, and on Thursday, Seweid went missing and turned up on Friday.
When Seweid told the truth on Wednesday, she told detectives that she made it all up in order to hide her Christian boyfriend from her Egyptian parents.
Father Syeed Seweid was asked about his daughter’s actions and her decision to lie.
“I have no idea,” he said. “She’s the one that can speak for herself.”
