You may have seen this video floating around of a meeting of white supremacists singing Donald Trump’s praises and celebrating the fact that “their people” won the election and that they’re better than everyone else because they’re white. There’s full-on Nazi salutes and everything –
Is this absolutely creepy? Darn right it’s freaky. At the same time – is this gathering of bigots indicative of all Trump supporters?
The fact is that the people who voted for Donald Trump run a political spectrum as diverse as you can imagine. There are the people who wholeheartedly supported him from the beginning of the primaries. There are the people who supported someone else in the primary, but vowed they’d vote for him if he became the nominee. There are the people who couldn’t stand the man, but reluctantly voted for him because the alternative was Hillary Clinton. And still, there are others who refused to vote for him on principle, but are now accepting the results of the election and doing what they can to help him succeed in a peaceful way, but have no problem in holding him accountable if/when he makes mistakes.
Of course there are racists and bigots who vote in the elections! You find them in any candidate’s pool of supporters. Remember the KKK Grand Dragon who proclaimed that he was all for Hillary Clinton? Even further back than that, there were all kinds of nutty burn-it-all-down radicals who supported Barack Obama – from Bill Ayers to Jeremiah Wright.
Mr. CJ shared the above video on his own Facebook page and wrote the following to go with it. It’s so great and so well-written that I wanted to share it here in full with you all. He told me I could, so here it is –
So here we have a video of a gathering of the API, with racist language and people throwing up the Nazi salute. Shocking, yes. And yeah. These assholes are racist scum.
Yeah they identify with the alt-right. That doesn’t make the alt-right any more inherently racist than the Weather Underground or the violent wing of BLM makes Democrats all violent terrorists. The KKK identified with the Democrats too, but most Democrats aren’t racist either. And remember, President Obama had one of the Weather Underground as an advisor too. Does that make President Obama a terrorist? Of course not. Stop freaking out about Bannon being an advisor for Trump. Yeah he’s alt-right, but given that he employs people like Milo – in his own words a dangerous faggot – and Jewish reporters like Ben Shapiro for years makes charges of Anti-Semitism/bigotry a little hard to swallow. Especially since Shapiro, who has left Breitbart because of their support of Trump, still says that calling Bannon an Anti-Semite is ridiculous.
I most certainly am not alt-right, but it is a little hard to condemn them for employing the same identity politics the left has been championing for decades. This is part of why identity politics is so dangerous – eventually the majority will start playing by those rules and they outnumber the minority groups.
Newsflash people. One of the side-effects of you labeling half the country as racist sexist homophobic deplorables is the *ACTUAL* racist sexist scumbags are emboldened by it because you just got through telling them they have the support of half of the country.
It doesn’t matter that they don’t, they think they do. Because the mainstream media just told them they do.
How is this outcome surprising?
Stop giving groups like this or the KKK any credence whatsoever.
If they do illegal things, arrest them. Speech isn’t illegal, however, and trying to suppress them (such as Twitter banning the leader of the group in this video) only makes them martyrs for the cause and increases their influence. We need to let them keep speaking so everyone else can see how bad they are and recoil. That’s why Mel Brooks made a film like The Producers. Open mockery, not censorship.
The KKK had less than 5000 people nationwide. This flagship gathering of the API had less than 200 attendees – and more than that in protestors. In trying to smear your political opponents with guilt by association with racist bigots like these you’re just giving the racist bigots legitimacy they don’t deserve and can’t get on their own. That can lead to others joining them because they think its edgy, or cool, or that the group is much bigger or more powerful than it actually is.
Are these white supremacists utter scum? Of course! Are they representative of what America has now become? Not in the least! I don’t know anyone who agrees with what these actual racists believe, and I’d imagine that holds true for most of you reading this right now. This ugliness is repugnant to the vast majority of Americans, contrary to what liberals still living in their hipster bubbles may want to believe.
It’s time for the left to stop reaching for the “racist” label every time someone disagrees with their politics. The word has lost its meaning, so now when we see realracism taking place, nobody knows what to call it.
Racism exists, but it is heavily diluted by the goodness of ordinary people. And it’s high time that those ordinary people stop being lumped in with the relatively few scumbags in this country.
