TLC reality show, “Sister Wives,” has been no stranger to drama lately. Just last season, first wife, Meri Brown, told the family that she had been catfished by a woman pretending to be a man online.
The situation put strain on Meri’s relationship with husband, Kody, her daughter, Mariah, as well as her fellow sister wives.
For the show’s latest episode, TLC heavily teased another big announcement was on the way for the Brown family concerning Mariah, who is currently in college…
Mom Meri also tweeted out her thoughts, adding to the suspense:
My heart is beating fast! And I know what the announcement was! #SisterWives

As The Ashley’s Reality Roundup reports, the wives thought perhaps Mariah was nervous about announcing a courtship…with a boy. It turned out to be the exact opposite.
Instead, Mariah dropped a bombshell about how she identifies sexually:
“‘I’m gay!’ she announced to the room of shocked family members.
The announcement also came to a shock for the show’s viewers, as Mariah had never even hinted that she was attracted to women. For years, she was the only one of the older Brown family children who wanted to live polygamy, although she changed her mind about that once she went to college.
Although her parents were shocked, they were very supportive of Mariah, even Meri, who seemed sad that she had not figured out Mariah’s secret sooner.”
After the show, Mariah took to social media to thank fans for their support:
wow okay y'all making me cry with your support. thank you thank you thank you thank you
Fundamentalist Mormonism, to which the Browns most closely align their faith, does not traditionally approve of homosexuality. However, the Browns have expressed that everyone should be able to “structure” their family any way they want to — straight or otherwise.
Father Kody summed up the family’s feelings about the matter in the episode saying, “We’re not happy Mariah’s gay; we’re happy Mariah knows herself.”
According to Mariah’s Twitter account, she’s currently overseas and rang in the New Year with family in Dublin, Ireland.
