Time time has finally arrived. President Trump has called on the State Department to drastically cut funding to the United Nations.
For far too long, the United States has propped up the United Nations and allowed the flawed governmental body to exist.
That is all set to change now, as Trump plans to gut their funding and scale back U.S. involvement in it.
According to estimates, Trump has called on the State Department to cut funding by more than 50 percent. The 2018 topline budget proposal is expected to be released on Thursday and it is believed that it will include a 37 percent cut to the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development.
Richard Gowan, a U.N. expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations suggested that such a drastic cut would lead to “chaos.”
“[It would] leave a gaping hole that other big donors would struggle to fill,” he told FP, pointing to how the U.S. provided $1.5 billion of the U.N. refugee agency’s $4 billion budget last year.
Hopefully this is true. It is time to stop funding organizations that do not serve the interests of the American people.
