Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he plans to sign a legislation that would put sheriffs of sanctuary cities behind bars if they refuse to comply with immigration law in an effort to deal with sanctuary cities plaguing certain counties in the lone star state, according to a report by the Gateway Pundit.
During an interview on Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show,” Gov. Abbott said his administration is pushing to pass the law that will impose stiffer penalties on counties, such as defunding them, imposing fines or putting sheriffs in jail to ensure the immigration law is enforced.
He also added that it would be odd that the sheriffs could end up in the same prison cells that they are releasing illegal immigrants from.
The Texas Governor cited an example where he unilaterally used his authority to strip Travis County of funds that had been previously granted to them as grants by the Governor for criminal justice purposes, which defunded the county by about of $1.5 million.
