Two Democratic Senators said they will support the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, becoming the first Democrats to support President Donald Trump’s nominee, according to 100% Fed Up.
Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota on Thursday declared their support for Gorsuch’s confirmation, giving the GOP two of eight Democratic votes needed to avoid a contentious battle on the Senate next week.
In a statement, Manchin said he will vote to confirm Gorsuch to be the ninth justice on the Supreme Court because “senators have a constitutional obligation to advice and consent on a nominee to fill this Supreme Court vacancy and, simply put, we have a responsibility to do our jobs as elected officials.”
Heitcamp also released a statement saying Gorsuch “has a record as a balanced, meticulous, and well-respected jurist who understands the rule of law.”
Both West Virginia and North Dakota voted for Trump in last year’s presidential election.
