The Democrat mayor of Newark, N.J. said local law enforcement are being forced into becoming “fugitive slave catchers” with President Donald Trump’s threat to withhold federal funding from so-called “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants, according to 100% Fed Up.
Mayor Ras Baraka said in an interview with Al Sharpton on MSNBC Sunday that the Trump administration is “trying to intimidate us” and wants the local police to “run around and do their bidding in our cities.”
Baraka’s controversial comments that included a “slave” analogy came after the Department of Justice said it plans to take awayfederal money from cities that would not comply with federal immigration laws.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last week that state and local governments requesting for grants from the Justice Department need to be certified that they are not sanctuary cities for them to receive the funds.
There are 200 known sanctuary cities across the country, and WCAU-TV reports there are a “handful” in New Jersey, including Newark and Jersey City.
