A former presidential aide to President Barack Obama found herself in hot water following pushback for agreeing to take a $30,000 speaking fee from cash-strapped Northeastern Illinois University, according to 100% Fed Up.
Northeastern announced last month that Valerie Jarrett, a former top adviser to President Barack Obama, would be the featured speaker at the school’s commencement ceremony on May 8, where she will also receive an honorary degree.
NEIU was bashed to agreeing to pay the former presidential adviser at a time when classes have been canceled for three days and instructors are being forced to take unpaid days off due to its financial troubles caused by a lengthy partisan state budget debate.
After trustees complained during an April 6 board meeting, a donor subsequently stepped in to cover Jarrett’s $30,000 fee. Later she decided not to collect a speaking fee altogether, her spokeswoman said Tuesday.
