Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill Sunday that bans so-called “sanctuary cities” or counties and cities that do not cooperate with federal immigration officers inquiring about the immigration status of an individual.
The bill will allow police to inquire whether an individual is staying in the U.S. legally during routine stops and threatens to arrest sheriffs if they do not cooperate with ICE agents.
Texas’ state legislature, dominated by a strong Republican majority, approved the measure and sent it to Abbott’s desk for his signature earlier this month.
Opponents of the bill say that Hispanics in Texas will now be subjected to racial profiling and predict the law will create fear among immigrant families.
Abbott, who livestreamed the signing on Facebook Live, said that key policies of the bill had already been tested at the U.S. Supreme Court.
In a news release, Abbott said, “As Governor, my top priority is public safety, and this bill furthers that objective by keeping dangerous criminals off our streets.”
The governor’s office announced that the measure will go into effect on September 1.

Texas Governor Abbott just signed a ban on so-called ‘sanctuary cities’…COMMON SENSE IS BACK!
Chances of this not being challenged in court are slim. It’s pretty sad when your governor can’t even enforce laws already on the books. Pitiful!
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday signed a law targeting so-called “sanctuary cities” that allows police to ask about a person’s immigration status and threatens sheriffs with jail if they don’t cooperate with federal authorities.
