Kellyanne Conway hit back at critics of President Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey who claim the decision was based on reasons different from what the White House has said.
In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday, Trump’s top adviser said Comey’s firing has nothing to do with his agency’s investigation into alleged Russian collusion with Trump’s campaign to influence the outcome of last November’s presidential elections, rather it was all about performance.
The White House’s public reasoning for Comey’s firing was his handling of Hillary Clinton’s email investigation during the 2016 campaign.
Cooper played a series of clips showing candidate Trump praising Comey’s treatment of the investigation, then went on to ask Conway why the administration is concerned with Clinton’s email investigation when Trump was praising it during the campaign.
As Conway was responding, Anderson reacted with an eyeroll that has since gone viral on social media.
“This has nothing to do with Russia. It has everything to do with whether the current FBI Director has the president’s confidence and can faithfully and capably execute his duties,” Conway insisted.
