A Veterans Affairs hospital in suburban Chicago is reportedly serving raw, expired and uncooked food while the hospital’s nutrition department head was seen selling handbags at work.
The Daily Caller has obtained exclusive photos from a VA employee showing Hines VA Medical Center serving raw food, and on many occasions served after it has expired.
The employee, who preferred to stay anonymous, also said that conditions in the hospital are so unsanitary that a mouse can often be found in the kitchen.
A hole in the ceiling was left unattended for nearly six months before the hospital decided to fix it in late April.
The hospital had also run out of Kosher food, causing an observant Jewish veteran with no food to eat for several days.
Among the photos acquired were screenshots of Hines VA’s head of nutrition, Valerie Adegunleye, selling handbags for her personal business, on government time.
The Daily Caller reports:
In April, new VA Secretary David Shulkin said employees who failed veterans would lose their jobs.
“Accountability is an important issue to us at VA and something that we’re focusing on to make sure that we have employees who work and are committed to the mission of serving our veterans,” Shulkin said at an April 26 press conference. “When we find employees that have deviated from those values, we want to make sure that we can move them outside the VA and not have them working at VA.”
