Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sat down with NBC “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd for an interview Sunday where he spoke about his loyalty to President Donald Trump.
When asked by Todd if he is concerned about his independence in the Trump administration following the firing of FBI Director James Comey, Tillerson quickly responded that he has “a great relationship with the president.”
The former Exxon-Mobil chief executive said that he understands Trump’s objectives are and he makes it a point to clarify it with him in case some of those objectives are not clear.
“We talk about it. I am devoted to helping the president achieve his objectives, helping him be successful,” Tillerson said.
Todd’s succeeding line of questions touched on Tillerson’s loyalty to Trump, implying that this could compromise his allegiance to the interests of the American people.
“I will never compromise my own values, Chuck,” Tillerson shot back. “So that’s my only line. And my values are those of the country.”
