House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz asked the FBI on Tuesday if its former director James Comey did write a memo detailing the communication between him and President Donald Trump.
The request was made through a letter that Chaffetz sent to Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe.
Chaffetz’s formal request comes after he tweeted “@GOPoversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists. I need to see it sooner rather than later. I have my subpoena pen ready.”
The move by the Republican Utah congressman comes after reports broke out that Comey wrote a memo that detailed Trump asking him to halt the bureau’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The New York Times, which is the first to report about the memo on Tuesday, said that Trump made the request to Comey one day after Michael Flynn was fired by the president.
The White House has denied the claims made in the New York Times article and pointed to McCabe’s testimony in the Senate last week, in which he said no effort has been made to impede the FBI’s investigation into the matter.
In addition, Chaffetz also said he has invited Comey to testify before a House panel next Wednesday.
