A Mexican priest who officiated a mass in Mexico City was stabbed in the neck Monday by a middle-aged Muslim man who went up to the altar carrying a blade, the Gateway Pundit reports.
Witnesses say the suspect’s intention was to slit the priest’s throat. The attacker, John Rene Rockschiil, was arrested while he was trying to run away after the stabbing incident.
Mexico City prosecutors said Rockschiil identified himself as a U.S. national and works as an artist.
Authorities are still looking for answers as to the Rockschiil’s motives for the crime.
After the police arrived at the scene, they immediately transferred the Catholic priest to San Miguel Chapultepec hospital.
The clergyman, Father Miguel Angel Machorro, is still in critical condition, according to the Archdiocese of Mexico. He sustained serious wounds near the lung and the jugular vein and was bleeding profusely.
