Former Rep. Anthony Weiner broke down as he admitted Friday in federal court to transferring obscene material to a 15-year-old girl, the Gateway Pundit reports.
Weiner told U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in New York City, “I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse,” apologizing to the minor with whom he “sexted” last year.
As part of the plea deal, Weiner is required to forfeit his iPhone, continue his mental health treatment, surrender his passport and is not allowed to have any contact with the girl.
The 52-year-old former New York congressman was released on bail pending his sentencing on Sept. 8, according to Weiner’s statement.
Government prosecutors recommended Weiner be imprisoned between 21 and 27 months, which Weiner’s attorneys agreed to, though it will be up to a judge to make the final decision.
Before his fall from grace due to a string of sexting scandals, Weiner was once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party and served as a congressman for almost 12 years.
