German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that Europe can no longer “completely depend” on foreign partners like the U.S. and the U.K., the Gateway Pundit reports.
Her comments came after President Donald Trump did not give his commitment to the 2015 Paris climate agreement during the recently concluded G7 summit in Sicily.
Merkel told a crowd during a campaign event in Southern Germany, “The times in which Germany could fully rely on others are partly over. I have experienced this in the last few days.”
“We Europeans really have to take our destiny into our own hands,” Merkel added.
Merkel’s frustration during the G7 meeting followed a testy moment during the NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday.
During that summit, Trump left Merkel and other European leaders irked after he berated them for their failure to spend their fair share on the cost to run the alliance.
