Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis said during an interview on Sunday that “nothing keeps him awake at night,” and argued instead that he’s the reason why others are up at night.
During an interview with CBS “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson, Mattis personified his reputation for making brutally honest quotes.
They discussed the various threats the U.S. is currently facing, such as ISIS, turmoil in the Middle East and the nuclear threat of North Korea.
When asked by Dickerson what keeps Mattis up at night, the retired military official didn’t mince words in his response.
“Nothing. I keep other people awake at night,” a confident Mattis said.
Mattis was named by Marine Corps Times the “most revered Marine in a generation” upon his retirement from the Marine Corps.
The Daily Caller reports:
“I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes. If you fuck with me, I’ll kill you all,” Mattis told Iraqi leaders during the 2003 invasion.
“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet,” Mattis was known to tell Marines under his command during the Iraq war.
In his interview with Dickerson, Mattis discussed the U.S. military’s shift in strategy in the fight against ISIS. “Annihilation” rather than “attrition” is the goal now, he said.
