HBO’s Real Time host Bill Maher has been widely criticized on social media for using a racial slur during an interview with Republican Senator Ben Sasse from Nebraska, the Gateway Pundit reports.
In an episode that aired Friday night, the comedian and Sasse were discussing about the dividing line between being an adolescent and being an adult, and how matured Californians still dress up for Halloween.
When Sasse, who appeared on the show to promote his new book “The Vanishing American Adult,” said that this doesn’t happen in his home state Nebraska, Maher said he should visit there more often.
Sasse jokingly said, “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.”
“Work in the fields?” asked Maher. “Senator, I am a house n***er.”
Maher quickly reassured the audience that it was a joke.” Neither Maher nor Sasse addressed the remarks further, and they went on to talk about other subjects.
Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson took to Twitter where he wrote, “But really, @BillMaher has got to go. There are no explanations that make this acceptable.”
