House Majority Whip Steve Scalise continued to show signs of improvement as his condition was upgraded to serious from critical following several surgeries treating him for gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting at a congressional baseball practice, The Daily Caller reports.
The MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement: “Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition.”
“He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement. He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones,” the statement said.
Scalise, along with three others, were shot during an attack on the Republican baseball team’s practice last week.
Authorities identified the gunman as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., who later died from wounds sustained during a shootout with law enforcement.
The Louisiana lawmaker’s office tweeted: “He is more responsive and is speaking with his loved ones. The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers.”
