Supporters of Georgia’s Republican candidate Karen Handel chanted the name of President Donald Trump during her victory speech after beating Democrat Jon Ossoff in a special election in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, the Gateway Pundit reports.
In her speech, Handel first thanked the GOP leaders for their support in her bid then gave “special thanks to the president of United States of America,” which got the crowd chanting Trump’s name.
Handel garnered 52 percent of the votes, besting Ossoff’s 48 percent, in the most expensive race in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Prior to Tuesday’s vote, polls consistently suggested that Ossof would beat Handel in a close race, which left many Democrats thinking that the special election for the seat vacated by former Rep. Tom Price is a referendum on the Trump presidency.
Instead, the result was a humiliating defeat for the Democrats, who poured in a staggering $24 million on Ossof’s campaign.
The loss came despite a spate of celebrities who supported the campaign that include Rosie O’Donnell, Samuel L. Jackson and Jane Fonda.
