About 500 police officers were injured in Hamburg during the G20 summit as violence continued into Sunday in the German city.
Even after world leaders have already left the city the day before, new riots still erupted Sunday, where protesters even burned cars, the police said.
While Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz lauded law enforcement for their job, he blasted the rioters for doing damage to the city.
“This cannot take place… This is unforgivable and indefensible,” Scholz said.
The demonstrators, who used glass bottles to target and burn vehicles, were pushed back by the police using tear gas and water cannon.
At a news conference, the Hamburg police said 476 officers sustained injuries since Thursday. Over 20,000 policemen have been deployed in the city, and 186 people have been arrested.
The Daily Caller reports:
One police officer asked Merkel directly if she thought it was worth hosting the summit considering what the police force had to go through.
“You have protected something that I would say was worthy of protection,” Merkel replied.
