Democratic California Rep. Brad Sherman has introduced articles of impeachment on Wednesday against President Donald Trump, accusing the president of obstruction of justice, The Daily Caller reports.
The filing comes just a day after Donald Trump Jr. released to the public his email conversation with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign where he was offered with incriminating information about his father’s opponent Hillary Clinton.
The lawmaker from Los Angeles area cited Trump’s alleged pressuring of former FBI director James Comey to abandon the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s links to Russia as his reason for filing the articles.
Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green was the only member of the chamber to co-sponsor the measure.
To successfully impeach Trump, the House needs to reach a majority consensus, which makes it difficult for the Democrats because the GOP holds a 46-seat majority.
During an off-camera press briefing on Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the move is “utterly and completely ridiculous” and a “political game at its worst.”
