The House on Thursday voted down an amendment being pushed by the GOP to prevent the Pentagon from paying for gender transition treatment.
The amendment, which was filed by Republican Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, would have prohibited the Pentagon to use government money to provide medical treatment related to gender transition of defense personnel.
Transgender troops in the armed forces are currently allowed to receive treatment such as hormone therapy and even surgery.
Democratic Rep. Jared Polis’ effort to block the amendment to reach the House floor was defeated when the Rules Committee voted 2-8 on party lines.
In the last Armed Services markup, Hartzler said that the government could end up spending up to $1.35 billion over the next 10 years for surgeries alone.
But the Democrats, with the help of 24 Republicans, defeated Rep. Hartzler’s amendment by a 214-209 vote.
The Daily Caller reports:
Pelosi blasted Republicans for the amendment earlier Thursday, saying that trying to strike down gender transition treatment is a threat to national security.
“Republicans should be ashamed: instead of protecting the men and women who risk their lives to defend our freedoms, they are fighting to rip away the health care of thousands of brave service members,” Pelosi said in a statement. “This cowardly Republican amendment targeting transgender men and women in uniform effectively bans these patriotic Americans from serving their country.”
