As sex-change surgeries by transgender individuals serving in the U.S. armed forces would cost the taxpayers $1.3 billion over 10 years, President Donald Trump made a controversial decision on Wednesday to ban transgender individuals in the military.
Citing increasing cost and military readiness of those who undergo the delicate procedure, Republican Sen. Vicky Hartzler introduced an amendment to remove funding for sex-change surgeries in the Defense Department’s budget.
The amendment was eventually blocked after 24 Republicans joined the Democrats to narrowly reject the measure.
Hartzler, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, praised President Trump’s decision to reverse the policy of allowing transgender service members to openly serve in the military.
This policy was enacted during the Obama administration under Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
The lawmaker from Missouri said that the $1.3 billion cost does not cover additional medical costs such as mental health services, hormone therapy or costs related to surgical complications.
The Gateway Pundit reports:
It is astounding how many put the “social justice” agenda before the burden of this nation’s hardworking taxpayers as well as the functional needs of the military. Each transgender surgery cost approximately $132,000. That expense multiplied by the .7% of the U.S military population that identifies as transgender, and would potentially need gender identity related medical treatment, generates a hefty financial cost.
Congresswomen Vicky Hartzler is a strong opponent of taxpayer funded sex changes, who provided detailed calculations showing the estimated number of services members seeking gender reassignment surgeries.
