Former vice president Joe Biden reportedly called Sen. John McCain before the Senate vote last week on the “skinny repeal” health care repeal bill and asked him to oppose the measure, the Young Conservatives reports.
McCain was called by both Biden and former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who both pleaded the Arizona senator to vote no to the legislation, according to The Washington Post.
During his conversation with McCain, Biden reflected on his son’s death caused by the same brain cancer the Republican lawmaker has been diagnosed with.
The call apparently made a difference to the way McCain voted in the Senate on Friday, stunning his fellow Republicans and even Democrats.
McCain joined Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to vote against the bill.
The three no GOP votes, alongside with the complete opposition from the Democrats, are what led to the bill’s demise.
