A Minnesota state representative and mayoral candidate in Minneapolis proposed disarming most of the city’s police officers, 100% Fed Up reports.
Rep. Raymond Dehn thinks the police should have their sidearms removed, but he is not opposed to have their guns kept in their cars in the event that they would need their weapons when under threat.
“Officers don’t need to carry guns on their person all the time. Currently, officers carry all sorts of assault weapons in their cars. So why can’t one of those weapons be the side arm?,” he said.
Dehn, a Democratic state representative serving the 59B District, also said he would be open to other ways for cops to protect themselves like pepper spray or a night stick.
Minnesota Mayor Betsy Hodges disagrees with Dehn’s proposal and said that police officers shouldn’t be allowed to operate in “a world with people who have guns.”
His plan comes following a Somali-born police officer shot and killed a white Australian woman who called 911 to report a potential sexual assault near her house.
