Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden on Tuesday avoided talking about how an Mexican illegal immigrant raped an elderly constituent despite previous charges have been filed against the attacker, The Daily Caller reports.
When asked by a reporter of The Daily Caller about Sergio Martinez – an illegal immigrant who has been previously deported 20 times – raping a 65-year-old woman in her Portland home, the Democratic senator refused to discuss the issue.
“We’ll have more to say about that another time. Today is about taxes,” the senator said as he veered off to discuss the Russia meddling probe.
Martinez is now facing charges for sexually attacking the elderly woman and another female in the area on July 24.
Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese said that Martinez was released one week before committing the crimes. He only served 31 days in the county jail before he was out again on July 17.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said it issued an immigration detainer against Martinez in December and requested local authorities to notify them before Martinez’s release so he can be taken into custody by ICE agents.
But ICE was never informed when local officials released the 31-year-old illegal alien to the community.
