A group of demonstrators, majority of them are blacks, pulled down a Confederate statue in Durham, North Carolina during a rally against racism Monday outside a government building.
Protesters gathered in front of the old Durham County courthouse around the statue called the Confederate Soldiers Monument.
The monument was dedicated to the city in 1924, and depicts a soldier with the engraved words “In memory of the boys who wore the gray” in reference to the Confederate troops during the U.S. Civil War.
Durham police said they monitored the events as they unfolded but only to ensure that the protesters were “safe” but did not make any arrests.
In a statement, Durham police spokesman Wil Glenn said, “Because this incident occurred on county property, where county law enforcement officials were staffed, no arrests were made by DPD officers.”
The statue removal came just two days after the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia when antifa forces clashed with protesters rallying against the removal of the statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
