A sonic attack caused U.S. and Canadian diplomats in Cuba to suffer symptoms from hearing loss to damage to the central nervous system according to their medical records.
State department officials have launched an investigation into whether the diplomats were targets of a suspected sonic attack at their homes masterminded by the Cuban government, according to CBS News.
Over 10 American and five Canadian diplomats stationed in Havana have experienced “a variety of physical symptoms” during the fall last year, the State Department said.
Doctors who examined the diplomats said patients complained about balance problems, headaches, hearing loss and nausea.
Many of them were so stricken that they had to abruptly cancel their tours and return home early.
In retaliation, two officials at the Cuban embassy in Washington were expelled in May. State Secretary Rex Tillerson also warned that it holds the Cuban government responsible for finding out who carried out the attacks.
Havana has denied any involvement with the attacks against the diplomats.
