A Catholic school in California is facing backlash after officials decided to remove a number of religious statues, including those of Virgin Mary and Jesus, from its campus in an effort to be inclusive.
Last year, San Domenico School’s board of trustees approved unanimously the plan to remove the religious icons. Now, only 18 of the original 180 icons remain.
Parents of students attending the San Anselmo, Calif. based school “raised concerns” about the removal of significantly large number of statues.
“Over the last few years we’ve had fewer Catholic students as part of the community and a larger number of students of various faith traditions,” explains Cecily Stock, head of the school.
Others who supported the removal of the statues said the move will bring a more inclusive environment for students of other religions.
Amy Skewes-Cox, head of San Domenico School’s board of trustees, said that religious statues could alienate children of other faiths.

This is pure madness! Parents and alumni are outraged that this school’s decision makers felt in order to be inclusive, the school had to let go of its religious identity. Can’t the Catholic school be inclusive AND religious too? What do you think? We think it’s bunk!
