Hungary has significantly reduced illegal immigration by more than 99 percent after constructing border fences in response to the European refugee crisis, Breitbart reports.
In what is seen as a potential case study for President Donald Trump’s planned wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, Hungary’s fences caused illegal immigration to fall from 391,000 in 2015 to just 1,184 this year.
The success of the project was announced during the second anniversary of the Hungarian government’s move to close its border with Serbia.
Chief Security Advisor György Bakondi said, “The system of technical barriers is the key to the success of border security, and without it, it would be impossible to stop the mass arrival of immigrants.”
The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had to quickly address the influx of migrants after German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that her country will accept an unlimited number of asylum seekers.
So the government decided to set up twin fences with watchtowers that are patrolled by newly hired border guards instead of making a solid wall that would have taken a longer time to build.
