California lawmakers on Saturday approved a “sanctuary state” bill aimed to limit how jurisdictions cooperate with federal immigration agents to counter the Trump administration’s deportation orders.
Under the proposal, it limits police cooperation with federal immigration agents in an effort to strengthen protections for illegal immigrants residing in the state.
It will now be taken to the desk of California Gov. Jerry Brown, who backed the bill after the leadership of the state Senate agreed to water down the bill.
After negotiations, the plan will keep authority for prison and jail officials to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
“These amendments do not mean to erode the core mission of this measure, which is to protect hardworking families that have contributed greatly to our culture and the economy,” said state senator Kevin de León. “This is a measure that reflects the values of who we are as a great state.”
But Thomas Homan, the acting director of ICE, warned of “tragic consequences,” saying the new rules “will make California communities less safe.”
Daily Wire reports:
California’s soon-to-be sanctuary state status is yet another example of how far the state has sunk into leftism, and willing to ignore the tragic results of similar policies, including the murder of Kate Steinle. Illegal immigrants are already a major drain on California’s budget and will only exacerbate the state’s increase in crime. It’s also a move that’s just plain lawless, as the state is thumbing their noses at federal law.
The Golden State may be at the point of no return.
