A female criminology student has been jailed for falsely accusing a taxi driver of raping her for refusing to accept her £10 note covered in kebab oil, The Goldwater reports.
Sophie Pointon, 22, who wants to become a police officer, will be spending 16 months in jail after she claimed that the driver groped her at the back of the cab after she was picked up following a night out in Leeds, England.
Local police were able to locate the driver, a father of five, and placed him in custody for six hours before releasing him. Because of the accusation, the driver was prevented to work for four weeks.
He was also a devout Muslim, and the false accusation tainted him among fellow Muslims. He was shunned by his friends and other members of his community.
In an interview with lawyers, the driver recalled Pointon being “extremely drunk” and holding a kebab when she entered his cab.
When he refused to take the note because it was covered in kebab oil, Pointon then became abusive but he did not think much of it at the time.
