President Donald Trump on Friday called on NFL owners to drop players who refused to stand on the field as a protest during the national anthem, Young Conservatives reports.
Speaking at a campaign rally for Alabama Sen. Luther Strange, the president wanted NFL executives to take a hard-line stance against players who take a knee while the song is being played.
Trump said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when someone disrespects our flag to say, Get that son of a bitch off the field right now! Out. He’s fired! He’s fired!”
The president’s remarks were greeted with wild cheers from supporters who were also chanting, “USA, USA, USA!”
Trump then proceeded to mock the NFL and its dipping TV ratings, which he described as “down massively, massively.”
He took credit for the league’s falling TV popularity. “The No. 1 reason happen to be that they (viewers) like watching what’s happening with yours truly,” Trump said.
