A 79-year-old military veteran was shocked to receive a check for $0.02 from the federal government.
Like any normal day, Bruce Rideout went outside and retrieved his mail. Among the pile, he saw a letter from the government.
After opening the letter, he was shocked to see that he had been sent a check for $0.02. He was so excited by the check that he decided to buy an $80 frame for it.
“First, they all laugh,” the 79-year-old military veteran recalled. “The second thing is always, ‘Do you know how much it cost them to send this check?’”
“It’s unique,” he said, apparently bedazzled by the mystery check.
According to the Veterans Benefits Administration, they have a policy in place to not issue “a paper check for amounts under $5 nor an electronic transfer for less than $1 in beneficiary payments.”
While it is wasteful for the government to send out such measly checks, it is nice to see a veteran laughing and having a good time with it.
Still, the check aside, the VA needs to get their act together and stop wasting our hard earned tax money.
