UC Berkeley is known as a liberal cesspool and the ultimate place to protest without consequences.
However, a quick scan of the City of Berkeley’s website shows how ridiculous the entire thing has become.
Posted clearly on the city’s website is a page that talks about protesting. Deep in the details, the page requests that protesters tell officers about protests, advertise them properly, and to notify them if they are looking for “symbolic arrests.”

UC Berkeley defended the practice, saying that the individuals who are symbolically arrested still face charges.
“This type of arrest is where someone advises the Police Department in advance that they want to be arrested (for something like blocking the roadway) for the purpose of making a political statement,” a Berkeley police spokesman told Heat Street. “This is an actual arrest, and those who engage in them, despite the fact that they requested it, are still arrested with charges forwarded to the DA’s Office.”
Last weekend, violent protests broke out in Berkeley, in which several Donald Trump supporters were attacked for their support of the president.
