As tensions escalate in the Middle East and North Korea, China is pushing down a new path to reform the People’s Liberation Army.
According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a complete transformation of the Chinese army.
The goal is “to transform it into a leaner fighting force with improved joint operations capability.”
That news, plus China’s previous comments about strengthening its armed forces for amphibious invasions, is making China’s neighbors worried about a potential takeover.
“This has profound and significant meaning in building a world-class military,” Xi said during a speech to the commanders of the 84 new units of the Chinese military. (Hitler was building a “world-class military” in the 1930s, too.)
The Xinhua news agency, which is run by the Chinese state, said Xi was called the reform “important in building strong armed forces through reform” and that it would “also have a profound influence on meeting the targets of enhancing the military in a new situation and building world-class armed forces.”
Reuters said that the new Chinese army would focus heavily on electronic warfare, including cyberspace.
The United States should certainly keep their eye on China and ensure that they stay one step ahead of them when it comes to technology and capabilities. Any potential Chinese threats need to be taken seriously.
