The student government at the Western Kentucky University voted in favor of providing free tuition to the school’s black students on Tuesday.
Why did they vote in favor of this? They felt they owed black people free tuition for how they were treated over 150 years ago during the days of slavery.
The resolution passed by a vote of 19-10-0 and calls on the university to treat slavery as a “debt that will never be paid.”
Andre Ambam, one of the resolution’s authors, told the “Herald” that economic disparity often prevented black students from attending the school.
“If you really care about diversity, if you really care about inclusion, if you really care about making this campus safe and accessible to everybody, having the student government’s support of reparation[s] for black students would be amazing,” Ambam said.
“This is something that I think is more importantly about sending a clear message than it is about actually trying to strive for the institution to actually give out free tuition to everybody,” added Brian Anderson, the other author of the bill.
The idea of white guilt is nonsensical. You don’t see Europeans demanding reparations for slavery that occurred in the Ancient, Classical, or Middle Ages.
Slavery is a terrible thing, it is tragic that it happened, but at a certain point, you need to take responsibility for your own failures and stop blaming something that happened over 150 years ago. Move on, shape up, and better yourself through hard work.
