President Donald Trump said on Monday that he wants NASA to reach Mars before the end of his first term.
NASA’s budget was heavily slashed by former President Barack Obama, but Trump appears ready to increase funding and to make the space race something special again.
Trump told NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson that he wants to reach Mars by the end of his first term.
“We want to do it during my first term and at worst during my second term so we want to speed that up, OK?” Trump said after Whitson explained that NASA might be able to get to Mars by the 2030s.
While Trump’s goals are admirable, they may be too ambitious at the moment.
In fact, the U.S. still relies on Russia to transport its astronauts to the International Space Station.
See Trump’s promise below:
There was something very special about the first space race. It demonstrated the capabilities of our nation and united the country under one cause. All of that hard work resulted in us being the first to land on the moon.
Hopefully we can put the political divide aside and focus on reaching Mars before the Russians or Chinese. It is time for America to demonstrate why it is the greatest country in the world.
