China made a huge request to all of its citizens in North Korea this week. In a strange move, China called on all of its citizens in North Korea to return home immediately.
According to the Korea Times, the Chinese embassy sent a message out on April 20, requesting that all of its citizens return home as soon as possible.
One Korean-Chinese resident said he left for China immediately after hearing of the notice.
“The embassy has never given such a warning. I was worried and left the country in a hurry,” said the man, whose identity was withheld.
Conservative Tribune reports:
The news outlet also reported that the man said many Korean-Chinese residents of Pyongyang were not taking the message seriously, saying the city’s “peaceful” atmosphere might lull them into a false sense of security.
The embassy’s warning is an indication that China is worried about what could happen if North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un does something to trigger a reaction from the U.S. military, which is keeping a close eye on the North’s movements.
China is also watching the rogue nation.
Over the last few weeks, China has been pressuring North Korea to curb its aggression, but North Korea has ignored China’s demands.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that China had threatened North Korea with sanctions.
“They confirmed to us that they had requested the regime conduct no further nuclear test,” he added.
