An Atlanta Police Department officer is making headlines after it was revealed that he gave a young thief a break and did something huge to help her struggling family.
Officer Che Milton was in his first week on the job when he saw a 12-year-old girl stealing a pair of $2 shoes from a local Family Dollar.
After apprehending the girl, she explained to him that she was stealing the shoes to help out her 5-year-old sister who didn’t have any shoes.
Milton asked the girl to take him to her house so that he could check on the family.
“The girl was the oldest of four children, their ages ranging from newborn to 12, and their living conditions were poor,” the Atlanta PD wrote in a Facebook post last Monday. “There were not enough beds for all of the children, the only furniture in the house was an old sofa and there was not much food in the home.”
“I saw the conditions,” Milton later recalled to CNN. “There was no food in the house and the kids were there.”
Conservative Tribune reports:
It wasn’t because of neglect, however. The young girl’s mother explained to Milton that she didn’t work because she couldn’t afford daycare. Her husband worked, but he didn’t make nearly enough money to make ends meet.
Disturbed by the unfortunate circumstances surrounding this family’s life, the young officer then took action by performing two amazing tasks.
First, he purchased four pizzas and two large beverages for the family so they could experience at least one nice meal. Then he contacted his local Division of Family and Children Services and asked them to assign a social worker to assist the family.
And that was that, as Milton made zero attempts afterward to earn accolades for his good deeds. He just continued doing his job as usual, until one of his peers came forward to commend him for his actions. Good, because he deserved it.
Plus, his story being shared by the Atlanta PD and quickly going viral wound up triggering a serendipitous side effect: Men and women from across the nation began asking how they could help. In response to this, the department set up a collection box and began accepting everything from diapers and shoes to sofas, lamps and chairs.
What an amazing story. Officer Milton is a kind man and an example of why American cops are some of the best in the world.
