While hardworking Americans struggle to pay their rent and provide for their families, one Georgian death row inmate was cooked a meal fit for a king.
J.W. Ledford was scheduled to be put to death on Tuesday after he murdered his elderly neighbors 25 years ago.
However, before he was killed, tax dollars were wasted to cook him a meal that the average American could only dream of having.
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, his requested final meal included “Filet mignon wrapped in bacon with peppe rjack cheese, large french fries, 10 chicken tenders with sauce, fried pork chop, Bloomin’ Onion, pecan pie with vanilla ice cream, sherbet and Sprite.”
According to Brent Cunningham, final meals are a way for states that still allow capital punishment to make itself look more humane.
“The state, after all, has to distinguish the violence of its punishment from the violence it is punishing, and by allowing a last meal and a final statement, a level of dignity and compassion are extended to the condemned that he didn’t show his victims,” he wrote.
Conservative Tribune reports:
n Ledford’s case, his victim was Dr. Harry Buchanan Johnston Jr., who at 73 years of age left behind a wife after Ledford savagely murdered him, according to a news briefing published by the Georgia Office of the Attorney General last month.
“According to the pathologist who performed the autopsy, the victim had suffered either ‘one continuous or two slices to the neck’ which destroyed virtually all the muscle and tissue on the left side of his neck and nearly severed his head from his body,” the briefing read. “Additionally, the victim sustained a small knife wound in the back and a number of other knife wounds in the neck.”
Advocates of the death penalty might argue that a sumptuous last meal is a foolish and wasteful custom, but it does cost less than maintaining the prisoner indefinitely as opponents of the death penalty want the state to do.
Do you believe we should allow death row inmates to order such lavish meals before being put to death?
