The Trump administration announced on Monday that President Donald Trump will allow former FBI Director James Comey to testify before Congress.
According to Fox News, the announcement was made by deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
“The president’s power to assert executive privilege is very well-established. However, in order to facilitate a swift and thorough examination of the facts sought by the Senate Intelligence Committee, President Trump will not assert executive privilege regarding James Comey’s scheduled testimony,” Huckabee Sanders said, reading a written statement.
Conservative Tribune reports:
Comey’s testimony is expected to focus on a memo he allegedly wrote that said the president had asked him to stop the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn’s relationship with Russia and Turkey.
Since the conversation was private, Trump could have invoked executive privilege. As late as last week, White House press secretary Sean Spicer intimated that might be a possibility.
“That committee hearing was just noticed — it’s got to be reviewed,” Spicer told reporters Friday. “The date for the hearing was just set. I haven’t spoken to counsel yet, I don’t know how they’ll respond.”
As late as Monday morning, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway was saying that “(t)he president will make that final decision” on invoking executive privilege and that “if Mr. Comey does testify we’ll be watching with everyone else,” according to the Washington Examiner.
Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican and member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, urged Trump not to block Comey’s testimony.
“I think the president is better served by getting all this information out. Sooner rather than later, let’s find out what happened and bring this to a conclusion,” Blunt said. “You don’t do that, I think, by invoking executive privilege on a conversation you had apparently with nobody else in the room.”
Let the testimony happen already so we can move on from this nonsense. Comey has nothing on Trump, because if he did, he wouldn’t have the authority to publicly testify about it.
