China and the United States may cooperate with each other when it comes to trade, but that doesn’t mean that they respect our military might.
According to a recent report from the Pentagon, China maritime militias are being trained by the Chinese government. The government has started equipping fishing boats and other smaller ships to help China defend its shores.
“China is building a state-owned fishing fleet for its maritime militia force in the South China Sea,” the report stated.
Conservative Tribune reports:
The Chinese Maritime Militia is a “subset of China’s national militia, an armed reserve force of civilians available for mobilization to perform basic support duties,” the Pentagon stated. These military groups could deployed all over Chinese waters, which would make them very hard to detect.
China has already used the CMM forces with great success in the past, and there is no reason to think it won’t continue to use them in future conflicts.
“The CMM has played significant roles in a number of military campaigns and coercive incidents over the years, including the 2011 harassment of Vietnamese survey vessels, the 2012 Scarborough Reef standoff, and the 2014 Haiyang Shiyou-981 oil rig standoff,” the report noted.
Our military officials must keep their eye on this and be ready for anything. If true, this represents a new form of civilian warfare and it is something we will need to be prepared for should we clash with China or go to war with North Korea.
