President Donald Trump shocked political critics when he managed to win Pennsylvania in the 2016 election.
It was the first time the state voted red since the 1988 election of George H.W. Bush.
During the election, Trump promised to help the coal industry and last week, he kept that promise.
According to Fox News, Corsa Coal Company officially opened a new coal mine in Somerset, Pennsylvania, last week.
Conservative Tribune reports:
For a depressed industry in a part of the state that’s taken the loss of industrial jobs the hardest, a new mine is a pretty big deal. Corsa CEO George Dethlefsen said that for the 70 positions the mine would create, there were 400 applicants.
“It’s a hard day’s work every day, but it’s worth it,” one of the miners said.
This certainly looks a lot different from Hillary Clinton’s infamous line that she would “put a lot of coal miners out of work.” While she tried to walk it back, voters in states where coal is a major part of the economy didn’t buy her back-tracking. And while Trump touted the new mine on his Twitter account, that wasn’t all he did.
Trump took it a step further last week, when he made an appearance the mines’ grand opening.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be speaking with you on this great, great day. The miners of Pennsylvania are mining coal again,” the president told the crowd.
“Washington may be 180 miles down the road, but I want you to know each and every day I’m fighting for you and all the forgotten men and women of America.”
