Lt. Col. Ralph Peters warned Americans in a Fox News appearance on Wednesday that a conflict with the North Koreans would be “messy and bloody.”
“It’s not just false hope, it’s a Korean delusion,” Peters said.
“It’s a delusion that’s captivated the American establishment in Washington — the think tanks, the institutions,” he continued.
“And so we’ve seen president after president — Clinton, Bush, Obama, and, initially, at least, President Trump — signing up for this idea that if only we pressed the right buttons, if only we pressure or cajole China, they will help us solve the North Korean problem.
“The fact is China has never helped us,” Peters said.
“China will never — look, first, make a choice between the U.S., our goodwill, and North Korea’s current regime. Beijing will always choose North Korea … We will never see Beijing remove that regime or even bully it to the point where it threatens to destabilize the regime. Period.”
In many ways, Peters is right and it appears as if President Donald Trump is taking notice.
“Trade between China and North Korea grew almost 40% in the first quarter,” the tweet read. “So much for China working with us — but we had to give it a try!”

“It’s really an issue of how do we stop them,” Peters said. “We cannot allow them to have an ICBM to which they have mated a nuclear warhead. We can’t allow it. And unfortunately — and I don’t like this idea — it’s probably going to require military action, and it will be not be surgical strikes, it will be messy and bloody, but unfortunately, may well be necessary.”
