A Texas teen who was raped by her brother and then beaten into having an abortion before her stillborn baby was burned on a grill has agreed to testify against multiple family members.
The gruesome story was brought to prosecutors’ attention in May of 2015, when the now 17-year-old unidentified victim told investigators she was sexually assaulted by her brother, Robert Cayald, 23, in August of 2012 when the girl was just 14 years old. The assault resulted in the teen getting pregnant.
The teen and her five siblings lived with her cousin Cecila McDonald, after moving to Texas from California in 2010. In fear of having their family members taken away from them by child protective services, McDonald, 27, along her her husband Lonnell McDonald, 28, Cedric Jones Jr., 28, and aunt Sharon Jones, 46, tried to cover up the assault by forcing the teen to have an abortion.
According to prosecutors Cecila McDonald and Sharon Jones “became very nervous” and “took matters into their owns hands.” After doing online research, they force fed the teenager various birth control medications in an attempt to force an abortion. When that did not work, family members repeatedly abused the teen between January and March of 2013.
Finally, in 2013, Jones and McDonald pinned the teen to the ground while Lonnell McDonald “repeatedly bounced up and down” on the girl’s stomach and kicked the teen until her water broke. The six-hour assault resulted in the teen bleeding heavily and the baby being delivered as a stillborn.
The relatives then burned the newborn’s body on a charcoal grill before before Cedric Jones Jr. disposed of the remains in an unknown location. The teenage victim, who now lives with a foster family, said that she did not initially report the assault because she was hoping she would forget it happened.
But in 2015, she went to police saying that she “didn’t really care anymore because I was tired. Tired of everything.”
Lonnell McDonald has been charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder and aggravated assault and faces up to 99 years in prison if convicted. Robert Cayald, the victim’s brother, was charged with sexual assault while Cecila McDonald, Cedric Jones Jr. and Sharon Jones have all been chaged with conspiracy to commit capital murder.
